Evrytania includes areas that may remind you of the Smokies of North Carolina and Tennessee or the Catskills of New York, pine-covered mountains, hills and valleys, fast running rivers and streams, lakes, both natural and man made, of all shapes and sizes, trout fishing, and of course trout eating too. Karpenissi is known as well as a winter ski center and a region famous for its grilled whole lamb and goat. If you continue south from Evrytania you will find yourself on the west end of the Corinthian Gulf and the fortress town of Nafpaktos, known for its castle, fortified harbor, restaurants and beaches, and of course the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the last major sea battle using rowing ships and the end of the Ottoman expansion. The area around Messolongi is famous for the role it played during the Revolution of 1821 and the fact that Lord Byron died here. It is also known for its wildlife and the city sits on a wetland that is home to hundreds of species of birds including pelicans, herons and flamingos.
