Kefalonia
The island of Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful and interesting islands in the Ionian group. Though many people may recognize its name from the book and movie Corelli's Mandolin, the island offers more than just stunning scenery and crystal clear seas. The interior of the island is mountainous with beautiful pine forests. The coast has a variety of beach types from fine white sand to small pebbles. Though almost every building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, almost the whole island has been rebuilt. People looking for resorts and beaches usually stay in the towns of Lassi and Skala. The town of Fiscardo was spared by the earthquakes and has a picturesque harbor and is popular with yachters. Coastal towns like Sami, Poros, Agia Efymia and Karavomilos offer the kind of Greek holiday spot that feels like the real Greece. For those who like city life Argostoli is one of the more vibrant cities in Greece with a large central square and a beautiful harbor with giant sea turtles that swim right up to you.
