Zakynthos
The island of Zakynthos (also called Zante-but not by anyone I have ever met) is known for a number of things. The iconic photo of Shipwreck Beach, listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world, has appeared in every travel magazine and website in the last few years. The resort town of Laganas is known for its clear azure sea and the fact that the caretta-caretta, or loggerhead turtles, come here to lay their eggs among the sun-beds and umbrellas, one reason they are an endangered species. Zakynthos town which was demolished by the same series of earthquakes that destroyed Kefalonia, has been rebuilt, though it no longer bares much resemblance to what used to be called "the Venice of the East". It does have the classiest range, if not the greatest number, of accommodations and restaurants on the island. It's a good place to base yourself for exploring the island but if you are not into exploring there are plenty of beach towns. Zakynthos has several daily flights from Athens, a daily easyJet connection from London Gatwick from late March to October and plenty of charters from northern Europe, especially the UK, from May to October. The main ferry connection is from Kyllini on the coast of the Peloponnese, which has several boats a day, according to the time of year, to Zakynthos Town.
