Macedonia, the kingdom of Alexander the Great, is one of the most beautiful areas of Greece, rich in natural beauty, history, archaeology and great food. Though it is popular with tourists from the north, because they can easily drive here, there are still large areas that are unexploited including many beaches you might have entirely to yourself. The beautiful Prespa lakes are among Europe's most important bird sanctuaries and Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. East of Olympus the long coastline has been called The Olympian Riviera for its beautiful beaches lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes and holiday homes. The city of Kastoria on lake Orestiada is considered to be Greece's most beautiful city by the Greeks themselves. The Pozar Springs (Kato Loutraki) are known for their healing waters, hotel spas, and ski slopes. Macedonia is an area which will grow in importance as the commercial and cultural center of the Balkans in the years to come.
